Marshfield re-establishes ADA comittee, members needed

Wicked Local South/Mariner - 3/6/2019

March 05-- Mar. 5--Marshfield is accepting applications for the newly-re-established ADA Committee, which is tasked with working with all town departments to ensure they meet standards required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The board of selectmen voted to once again form the committee at its meeting on Monday, Feb. 25.

"I absolutely think we should do it, and I hadn't realized it had lapsed," said Jim Fitzgerald, chairman of the selectmen. "There are enough issues that go on in terms of accessibility; there are number of areas to be addressed."

Over the past 15 years, two iterations of the committee had been formed. In the absence of a committee, though, the committee's responsibilities fall to the town administrator.

"For whatever reason, it fell by the roadside and I've gotten some requests," said Town Administrator Mike Maresco. "I think it makes good sense that the board would move to, once again, re-establish an ADA committee."

The committee will work with town departments to ensure things like signage, handicap door strikers and door handles are in line with standards laid out in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

"We need to do it, and we should do it," said Selectman Joe Kelleher.

The town is looking to fill five seats on the newly re-formed committee and is accepting applications and resumes of interested individuals.

"You want to have people that are experts in that area, people who know what to look for," Maresco said.
