Colonial Nursing Home in Weymouth to close in March

The Patriot Ledger - 11/13/2019

WEYMOUTH -- Colonial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will close in March, Bane Care Management announced today in meetings with staff and families of the residents. Letters are also being mailed to the families of all residents.

The 173-bed skilled nursing center filed a Letter of Intent with the state Department of Health and Human Services to close in March 2020, but the process of moving residents to other Bane facilities on the South Shore will begin before that, spokesperson Emily Sugrue said this evening.

Bane Care Management manages other skilled nursing facilities on the South Shore in Quincy, Hingham, Braintree and Duxbury and anticipates accommodating most of the long-term residents in a nearby Bane Care facility.

All direct care staff are being offered a matching job within the organization, Sugrue said. The repositioning is intended to make Bane Care stronger as a post-acute provider on the South Shore.

"This was a complex – but necessary – business decision for the Center, based on several factors, which when put together, lead to this difficult determination," says Richard Bane, president of Bane Care Management.

"Significant renovations and structural improvements are needed for the 50-year old building to keep up with the safety requirements and standards that patients and families expect and deserve. Unfortunately, in today's reimbursement climate, those improvements are too costly to undertake."

Bane Care has been in business since 1959. Bane said the decision will help ensure that the company can continue providing quality care for another 60 years. "This move makes us stronger and better for the future," he said. "We are one of the leaders in skilled nursing care in Massachusetts and we intend to stay that way."

More than two dozen homes across the state have closed in the last two years and more closings have been predicted by health care analysts.

The Colonial management team will coordinate with the state health department to develop a Closure Plan and comply with all requirements to safely transfer current residents.

"Over the next several weeks, the team will be working closely with our residents and their loved ones to help find alternative living arrangements", said Cyril Bellavance, executive director. "We are hopeful that our residents will choose to move into one of our neighboring Bane Care centers, where they will likely be cared for by a familiar team of caregivers."
