Agencies poised to apply for transportation funds

San Angelo Standard-Times (TX) - 12/20/2014

Dec. 20--SAN ANGELO, Texas -- An estimated $222,351 is available for San Angelo-area agencies to improve transit services to seniors and people with disabilities.

"The program is not only for the city of San Angelo, it's also for communities and counties in the San Angelo district," said Delma Childress, a public transportation coordinator for the Texas Department of Transportation. "But these projects have to be in the regional plan."

Childress met with a few transportation and senior adult care officials Friday to review the application process and to apply for funds from the Enhanced Services for Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities Program, also known as Section 5310.

The program, which is federally funded and administered by TxDOT annually, serves communities with 200,000 residents or fewer.

Eligible agencies include the city, the county, the Concho Valley Transit District and any private nonprofit agency serving seniors or people with disabilities -- such as Disability Connections or the Adult Enrichment Center.

One possible project is a partnership between the CVTD and the Adult Enrichment Center for TRANSA bus services to seniors, Childress.

Some other Texas communities, for instance, are applying to fund projects for a travel voucher system to seniors and those with disabilities, Childress said.

The deadline for applications is Feb. 9. Childress and the CVTD will coordinate meetings with local agencies and nonprofit organizations before then to go over the application process.

Once applications are submitted, Childress said, projects will be scored by a committee comprised of officials from local agencies that are not submitting projects.

The funds will then be awarded to projects -- based on the committee's scores -- for the 2015-16 fiscal year.

Of that $222,351 available to the San Angelo district, almost $60,000 has been allocated for rural programs and about $162,000 has been allocated for small urban programs.
