BRIEF: Olean man pleads guilty to attempted assault on disabled person

Buffalo News - 1/21/2017

Jan. 21--A former worker at the Rehabilitiation Center in Olean has pleaded guilty to charges of attempted assault on a person with developmental disabilities in his care.

Ahmad Burney, 52, of Olean, pleaded guilty to second-degree endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, along with one count of third-degree attempted assault, according to a special prosecutor with the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs.

The charges stemmed from a February 2016 incident in which Burney was accused of allegedly kicking a chair out from under the victim, pulling the victim up off the floor and squeezing the victim's neck, according to the justice center.

Burney also pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree harassment, and was sentenced to a conditional discharge, according to the justice center. He will have to pay a $400 fine, provide 60 hours of community service and attend anger management training.

Burney entered his plea before Olean City Court Judge Daniel R. Palumbo.

The case was investigated and prosecuted by the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs.
