Death of inmate with local ties investigated

Keene Sentinel - 12/7/2017

Dec. 07--New Hampshire officials are investigating the death of an inmate early Wednesday morning who lived in the local region for a time.

Philip Borcuk, 34, was a resident at the state Department of Corrections Residential Treatment Unit, which is designed for inmates who have significant disabilities due to mental health issues.

Corrections officers and medical responders tried life-saving measures after they heard Borcuk harming himself while he was alone in his cell, according to a news release from the N.H. Department of Corrections.

He was taken to Concord Hospital Wednesday morning, where he was pronounced dead, the release said.

Borcuk lists on his Facebook page that he was a graduate of Fall Mountain Regional High School.

An autopsy has been conducted by the state medical examiner's office and toxicology results are pending to determine Borcuk's cause of death, the Department of Corrections said.

Borcuk would have been eligible for parole on Dec. 5, 2018, and had a maximum release date of Dec. 5, 2019. He had been convicted of operating after being certified as a habitual offender, theft by unauthorized taking and assault by prisoner.

His death is being investigated by the Department of the Corrections in conjunction with the state medical examiner's office and State Police. The department will also partner with outside agencies working to understand what led to his death, the release says.
