BRIEF: Fort Smith planners OK Aldi expansion, restaurant, nursing home

Times Record - 12/13/2017

Dec. 13--The Fort Smith Planning Commission on Tuesday approved the construction of a restaurant and nursing home and a grocery store expansion.

ALDI Inc., a chain of discount grocery stores, has the green light to add 2,124 square feet to its store at 8400 Phoenix Ave. in Fort Smith after a 6-0 vote.

The work will include some parking lot reconfiguration, Development Services Director Wally Bailey said.

The expansion is for more space and more product, Sam Malinowsky of SM Engineering previously told the Times Record. ALDI is expected to begin construction early next year and be finished around May. The store would have to temporarily shut down for about four weeks near the end of construction.

A new ALDI store opened in October in Van Buren.

The commission also approved 6-0 the construction of a new Mexican restaurant with outdoor dining space at 8655 S. Zero St. despite the concerns, such as the noise from outdoor live music, of five people who spoke in opposition.

Construction of a new nursing home at 9000 U.S. 71 in Fort Smith was also approved with five in favor and commissioner Bob Cooper abstaining. The nursing home from STS RE, LLC is to be 62,000-square-feet with 179 parking spaces.
