Caregivers act will address Alzheimer's
Clarence Bee - 2/15/2018
On Jan. 22, the president signed into law the Recognize, Assist, Include, Support and Engage Family Caregivers Act of 2017, which was supported by Rep. Brian Higgins.
In New York, more than 1 million unpaid family caregivers provide more than 1 billion hours of care for approximately 390,000 individuals with Alzheimer's or other dementia.
The work provided by these caregivers is valued at more than $14 billion. I was one of those caregivers. It is a 24/7 job under stressful and tiring circumstances.
My late husband's and my journey may not have included several hospitalizations and as much heartache if we had known of the resources provided by the Alzheimer's Association.
Caregiving can be an emotionally, physically and financially draining role. And now Congress has acted to address the needs of our nation's family caregivers through the development and implementation of a coordinated national strategy with the passage of the RAISE Family Caregivers Act.
Endorsed by the Alzheimer's Association and the Alzheimer's Impact Movement, the RAISE Family Caregivers Act is consistent with the national plan to address Alzheimer's disease, which seeks to expand and enhance training, education and support for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's and other dementias.
