Staff Report

Want to know how to control your diabetes through meal planning and how diabetes affects your body?

A group of local organizations plan to provide a free class that answers those questions as well as how to monitor changes and how physical activity affects your control of the disease.

The Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative Southwest Center of Healthy Aging will partner with the Great Plains Literary Council and the Altus Public Library to offer a free educational program to assist those living with diabetes.

The Diabetes Empowerment Education Program, or DEEP, is a six-week program designed to teach self-management tools to older adults and their caregivers. The program begins at 2 p.m. on April 26 at the Altus Public Library, 421 N. Hudson St., and continues weekly through May 31. The class is limited to the first 20 people to sign up.

Rhonda David, an education specialist with the Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative, said each week the program focuses on a different aspect of the disease and provides tips to implement at home. The program is interactive and taught through small groups, games, activities and support conversations, she said through a prepared statement.

For more information or to reserve a spot in the classes, call the Southwest Center of Healthy Aging at (580) 699-3976.
