Char-Houston student delivering Easter baskets to nursing home residents

A Chartiers-Houston seventh-grader is planning an egg-stra special Easter for 120 residents of a McMurray senior living facility.

Lucas Strimel, who will turn 13 on April 29, was inspired to do something kind for others by teacher Gary Popiolkowski, who sends cards to nursing home residents during the holidays.

"I was thinking of donating my birthday money, but then we came up with the idea of Easter baskets," said Lucas. "There are a lot of people there who don't get anything for the holidays."

Lucas' great-grandmother, Melda, is a resident of ManorCare Health, McMurray, so he decided to focus his giving there.

He got off to a good start, collecting baskets and gifts for every resident, but once his parents ? Nicholle Hollenbach and Norm and M.J. Strimel ? posted his plan on social media, donations came pouring in.

"We've had so many people drop stuff off," said Norm. "Friends, strangers and businesses have donated. It's taken off like crazy."

The Strimel home in Houston continues to fill up with donations, including blankets, socks, mugs, toiletries, stuffed animals, candy, crossword puzzle books, coloring books, markers and more.

Lucas said his school has been supportive of his efforts. Students have brought in donations, and he, his family and volunteers have been permitted to come in on Good Friday to assemble the baskets. From there, they will be delivered to ManorCare.

In addition, Lucas said Angelo's Restaurant is donating a meal to ManorCare employees.

"I've never done anything like this before," Lucas said. "I wanted to give back."

Chartiers-Houston Superintendent John George said district is very proud of Lucas' efforts.

"It is always great to see young people understand the importance of giving of their time and support to others," George said.
