BRIEF: DeLand fire chief suffers 'cardiac emergency,' in critical condition

Oct. 03--DeLand Fire Chief Dan Hanes suffered a cardiac emergency on Sept. 23 and is in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care unit at Halifax Health. He is in critical condition.

"We appreciate all the love & support that everyone has shown. We will continue to send updates as progress is shown," said Danny and Andrew Hanes, sons of Chief Dan Hanes, in a statement. "We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to the DeLand Fire Department. The support is overwhelming and our family appreciates it more than words can express."

A firefighter has been by the chief's side at the hospital, according to a news release from the City of DeLand.

Division Chief Mike Vazquez is serving as acting fire chief.
