high schools - Flutie to speak at May 22 Sports Awards

Doug Flutie will be the speaker at the TCPalm.com/Treasure Coast Newspapers Sports Awards event in May.

The Sports Awards acknowledges top Treasure Coast area high school female and male athletes in 26 FHSAA-sanctioned sports from the fall, winter and spring seasons.

The event will be at 7 p.m.May 22 at the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce and is open to the public.

Flutie, a former NFL, CFL and USFL quarterback, played college football at Boston College, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1984.

A Melbourne Beach resident, Flutie is the lead analyst for NBC Sports Group's coverage of Notre Dame football.

Two finalists from each of the 26 high school sports will be invited to the Sports Awards, with the player of the year being named that night.

There will also be an overall female and male player of the year award, plus a top coach named for male and female sports.

An award that was recently added to the event is "I AM SPORT" – recognizing one Treasure Coast area high school female or male athlete who is committed to getting younger children active in their community. The award is sponsored by Nike. Nominations for the award can be submitted by the public.

This is the second year for the awards program at the Sunrise Theatre.Last year's event featured recently inducted Hall of Fame football player and former Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor. The top overall female and male athletes in 2016 were Vero Beach High School'sMegan Gorman and Sebastian River'sJarez Parks.
