B.C. coaching workshop supports soccer players with autism

A collaborative workshop brought soccer coaches from across the province to Cloverdale last weekend to take part in a free, all-day event that focused on working with and supporting players with autism.

The workshop was offered in partnership with BC Soccer , Surrey United Soccer Club , Canucks Autism Network , Vancouver Whitecaps FC, City of Surrey and Sport Surrey.

After a three hour classroom session at Cloverdale Recreation Centre, the coaches moved to an on-field component at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon (April 29), where they were able to take what they learned during the morning session and apply it on the field. They had three teams of kids and teens aged 6–8, 9–12 and 13 and above to help them out.

Despite Saturday’s rain, the players, coaches and volunteers were full of energy.

This was the first time that these organizations have united to host this workshop.

“We are thrilled to be collaborating with such wonderful organizations to deliver this training workshop and try-it day,” said Canucks Autism Network President and CEO, Katy Harandi, in a press release. “This workshop is a great example of groups working together to create accessible sporting opportunities.”

“Sports should be inclusive and accessible for all,” said Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi. “Soccer is a sport that brings people together and this workshop will help coaches ensure that all players have equal opportunities to participate and have fun.”
