BRIEF: HEI giving $50K for Special Olympics center

Oct. 11--Hawaiian Electric Industries Charitable Foundation is donating $50,000 to build a Special Olympics Hawaii Sports and Wellness Center designed for thousands of special needs athletes across the state.
The facility in Kapolei adjacent to the Kroc Center will include grass playing fields and a track, with construction planned to begin early next year. Services will include sports training and competitions, physical examinations and health screenings.
Since 2010, the electric company has contributed more than $10 million to local charities and nonprofits, with employees donating more than $4 million.
