Routine matters handled by Picayune School Board

Members of the Picayune School Board of Trustees heard about the Picayune Memorial High School's Exceptional Education student's participation in a Special Olympics bowling tournament, and tackled other matters during Tuesday's meeting.

Picayune School District teacher Pamela Fields said the students participated in the event with students from Pearl River County School District. During the event the students, ranging in ages up to 18, enjoyed a day of bowling.

The Board also approved a motion to accept a number of bids for old District vehicles, many of which don't run anymore.

District Finance Director Lisa Persick said the winning bids went to Durham Enterprises, who bid $377 on a bus, $777 on a 1990 International bus, $57 for an old Dodge Van, $277 each on two other vans and $1,277 for an old boom truck that is missing the title.

One other bid was submitted by Frank Egger just for the 1990 International bus for $617.

The Board approved a motion to accept the bids from Durham Enterprises.

In other business, the Board approved a motion to seek bids to have 28 HVAC systems replaced at South Side Lower Elementary. Assistant Superintendent Brent Harrell said the current units in operation are about 35-years-old.

The Board also approved a motion to allow the Rotary Club of Picayune to use school facilities on Dec. 12 in order to pack up food baskets for the needy.

From now on the Board will meet only once a month. Board Member Dr. Lori Blackmer said the change was made because the Board feels they can handle all District matters in one meeting as opposed to two.

The change will take place beginning in January of 2018. From now on monthly Board meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.

The last meeting of the year will take place on Dec. 12 at noon.
