Roanoke Times - 2/2/2018

Special Olympics Virginia will be hosting a Super Basketball Tournament Sunday, Feb. 4, in Cassell Coliseum at Virginia Tech.

Starting at 9 a.m. the 9,000 seat arena will begin to fill up with passionate competitors and enthusiastic fans from all over the region, as 24 Special Olympics teams from around Virginia will be competing for a chance to go to the State Championships.

The teams "play unified." Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.

Coach Buzz Williams will be on hand for the ceremonies, including a parade of athletes and a torch lighting, which will occur around 1 p.m. Dozens of Virginia Tech athletes and local law enforcement will greet the Special Olympians, present awards and help run the games.

Fans and groups can pregister at http://tinyurl.com/volunteer2cheerSWVA or plan to show up at Cassell Coliseum, pick a team and get ready to rock. Games begin at 9 a.m. and will end around 4 p.m.

Nancy Morehouse, director, Southwest Section Special Olympics Virginia, says, "The fans are the key to a great gameday atmosphere. HokieVision will amp up the action with live cameras broadcasting on giant video boards in Cassell. So we want to fill the stands with super fans."
