Salina Polar Plunge teams prepare for plenty of fun

Volunteers and local teams willing - and even not willing - to take an icy plunge still can sign up to help with the annual Polar Plunge Saturday, which benefits Special Olympics Kansas.

The event, which will kick off at 7:30 a.m. with a pancake feed, takes place at the Webster Conference Center, 2601 N. Ohio. It will include a 5K fun run or 1-mile strut and costume contest based on the theme "Get Your Cool On."

Registration opens at 8 a.m., and the run takes off at 9:30 a.m. The polar plunge will take place about noon.

Plunge participants who sign up at plungeks.org and donate or raise at least $75 will receive a commemorative T-shirt. To receive a commemorative scarf for the fun run, participants must raise or contribute $30 and pre-register by calling or texting (785) 280-1314.

Health screenings to be offered during home show

Salina Downtown Lions will offer free health screenings from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.Feb. 24 during the Salina Home & Leisure Show at Central Mall.

Digital vision scans will be offered for children. For adults, visual acuity and peripheral vision screening will be offered, as well as blood pressure, glucose and hearing tests.

Registration will be just to the left of the main Central Mall entrance.

KHP seeks comments as part of accreditation process

In March, the Kansas Highway Patrol will undergo onsite assessments as part of its goal to become an accredited law enforcement agency.

KHP began working toward four-year accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies in January 2016.

As part of the process, there will be opportunities for the public to provide feedback about the patrol. A public hearing is set for 5 p.m.March 13 in the Senate Room of Jayhawk Towers, 700 S.W. Jackson, Topeka.
