AROUND DELAWARE

Delaware State News - 2/14/2018

DOVER - In honor of International Angelman Day, which is observed annually on Feb. 15, Woodburn, the governor's mansion in Dover, will be illuminated in blue lights.

People are encouraged to wear blue to bring awareness to Angelman Syndrome, a rare neuro-genetic disorder that affects chromosome 15 and results in developmental delays. The 15th day of the month was selected in recognition of the 15th chromosome that is affected and February is International Rare Disease month. According to the Angelman Syndrome Foundation, the syndrome is often misdiagnosed as cerebral palsy or autism due to lack of awareness. Characteristics of the disorder include developmental delay, lack of speech, seizures, and walking and balance disorders. It affects about 1 in 15,000 people.
