Challenge at school raises $550 for Special Olympics

The Sun Chronicle - 2/15/2018

Staff at Foxboro Regional Charter School recently underwent a frigid challenge in order to raise funds for the Special Olympics.

A dozen staff members, including executive director Mark Logan, withstood an ice bucket challenge after students and staff reached their goal of raising $550 for the cause.

The challenge, which included Logan being drenched in a business suit, took place Friday.

Several of the school's staff members took part in the head-to-toe drenching.

"The Ice Bucket challenge happens every year and it is a really fun way to raise money and awareness for the Special Olympics," Fayth Romero, 16, a junior, said.

Shawn Gudmundson, high school physical education and health teacher, had a personal reason to support the cause.

"My sister competes in Special Olympics, so anything I can do to support is always worth it," he said.

Jamie Droste, student leadership and service coordinator, said staff members agreed to freeze in support of students Kailee Johnson, Hayley Harrison, Jessica Hicks and Emily Berry who will participate in a plunge into the Atlantic on March 7 at Craigsville Beach along with about 1,000 student leaders from across the state to aid Special Olympics.

Logan said it was worth getting drenched to witness staff and students giving back on behalf of Special Olympics.

"Any chance I get to participate in even the smallest of ways recognizes their hard work and promotes a culture of unity, respect and service," he said.
