Bears vs. area celebrities Wednesday in benefit basketball game

March 24--The Huron County Bears, the Special Olympics basketball team supported by the Huron County Board of Developmental Disabilities, will meet again at Norwalk High School's main gym with area law enforcement, service and business professionals at 6 p.m. Wednesday to benefit the Salvation Army of Norwalk.

The event will wrap up the celebration of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, which is typically in March in Ohio. While there will be no charge for admission to the game, donations of canned goods and other non-perishable food items will be accepted at the door.

There will be 50/50 drawings throughout the game, which will broadcast live on 1510 WLKR-AM. Staff will be taking orders and payment from fans for game T-shirts for $13 each, which will be printed and available about two weeks after the game.

The HCBDD self-advocate group will be selling pizza, shredded chicken, chips, candy and beverages at the concession stand to raise funds for the group members to attend conferences and learn more about their rights and responsibilities as citizens.

"The majority of our celebrity players will be back on the court with us this year, along with several new faces," said Kari Smith, HCBDD's superintendent. "They all said they had a lot of fun, and were looking forward to participating again. Commissioner Skip Wilde is returning as our very entertaining announcer, and the Baton Academy Twirlers of Norwalk will put on a halftime show. We're hoping for another tremendous turnout like we had at the game last March, and lots of donations to fill the shelves at the Salvation Army."
