VFW donation helps students with autism

June 17--More than $150,000 has been donated by the VFW Post 4066 to help special needs children in the community over six years.

And this year, Post 4066 raised more than $58,000 for the Social and Academic Instruction for Life program at Cleveland County Schools. The program assists children with autism in the school district by helping to pay for field trips, science kits, hands-on sensory objects, books and social-skills support materials.

The money was raised through a variety of fundraising events, including annual golf tournaments, barbecue dinners, auctions, poker runs, raffles, yard sales and private donations, said Gene Ramsey, commander of VFW Post 4066.

"The dedication and commitment to serving the children of this community, which the men and women of the Shelby VFW Post 4066 have shown through their fundraising efforts, is a testimony to their desire to make the world a better place," said Dr. Nellie Aspel, the school system's director for exceptional children.

Members of Post 4066 and students who benefit from the program were on hand June 6 when the check was presented. Students also gave poems and cards to members of the VFW to show their appreciation.

"I am always inspired when I have the privilege of talking with them about their plans," Aspel said. "Their passion and enthusiasm for raising awareness about autism have certainly made a difference in our community."
