The Anniston Star - 8/4/2018

Aug. 03--The sports community in Calhoun and surrounding counties steps up well for charity. The Sunny King Charity Classic just raised a record $140,000 in July, and Saturday's Woodstock 5K will raise money for ARC of Calhoun and Cleburne Counties.

Add the United Cerebral Palsy Coaches Challenge to the list.

The annual telethon, put on by the East Central Alabama United Cerebral Palsy today and Sunday at the Anniston City Meeting Center and organized by Mike Pruitt, involves area coaches. Weaver High wrestling coach Andy Fulmer returning to defend his title, having raised $4,746 of the $16,297.09 raised last year.

Other coaches returning this year include Cleburne County junior high football/softball Mark Hilburn, who raised $4,057.80 last year, Oxford football coach Ryan Herring ($2,320), Wellborn football coach Jeff Smith ($2,221.67) and Anniston girls' basketball coach Eddie Bullock ($943).

This year's lineup also includes Ohatchee assistant football coach Cole Heard and Faith Christian volleyball/boys basketball coach Justin Kisor.

Each will have their time on the clock to run down pledges. The money goes to help those who, like Pruitt, hope to live better lives with cerebral palsy. Pruitt learned to walk and talk while receiving therapy at a clinic in Birmingham, all made possible by contributions to a UCP telethon.

It's just another example of the sports community stepping up.
