Special Olympics set to hold registration day

Parksville Qualicum Beach News - 8/31/2018

Special Olympics Oceanside is ready to kick off its season on Sept. 9.

Registration will be held at the Picninc Shelter at the Parksville Community Park from 1 p.m to 3 p.m.

The local Special Olympics group offers a year-round sport programs for individuals with an intellectual disability aged 13 and up.

This fall, programs will include swimming (Monday and Friday), curling (Tuesday), Club Fit (Wednesday) and bowling (Saturday). For more information, email sobcoceanside@gmail.com or call 250-954-7137.

This coming Thursday, Aug. 30, Oceanside RCMP officers will be presenting Special Olympics athletes and supporters with certificates for their involvement with the Fit Family and Friends Summer Program.

It will be held at the picnic shelter at the Community Park at 11:15 a.m.

Fit Families and Friends Oceanside ran from July 5 to August 30, with an average of 16 participants attending the sessions. SOBC athletes got the chance to go out with their families, friends and social supports to meet as a group and exercise together.

The goal is to promote active living, to share health and nutrition tips, and to create an engaging environment to encourage each other and meet health goals together.

Groups met weekly for walks/hikes or other fun and healthy activities and to make and enjoy healthy snacks that can easily be made at home.

The program runs with the support of a Special Olympics Healthy Communities grant, the Golisano Foundation and our ongoing Provincial Partners, to expand our health programming.
