Day of Service

Hendricks County Flyer - 9/8/2018

Sept. 07--BROWNSBURG -- More than 15 species of plants -- 3,300 individual plants -- now dot a pollinator garden at Williams Park's outdoor classroom.

Planted by volunteers from Indiana University Health West Hospital in Avon, and parks employees, the garden will have multisensory elements that are helpful to all children, including those with autism. It will bring children into a garden and let them see, touch, taste and smell the plants and learn how they help keep the ecosystem in balance.

"The Day of Service is a pretty exciting event for all of us," said Joy Davis, manager of Community Engagement for the hospital. "Our volunteers really want to come out and serve the community. As members of the community it's our way of giving something back."

The 2,200 square foot pollinator garden was just one activity for hospital volunteers Thursday. They also had an obstacle course at the Brownsburg Farmers' Market.

"The activities align with healthy weight and nutrition efforts, addressing an identified need from IU Health West's Community Health Needs Assessment," said Berkley Rios, senior marketing associate.

Art Vasquez, president of IU Health West, said the hospital wants to make Hendricks County communities better places to live and visit.

"From a community service perspective, we have people working at the hospital who are Brownsburg residents, and who take care of patients from Brownsburg on a daily basis. This is a chance to get outside the walls of the hospital and help improve our communities," Vasquez said.
