Community news: Tinley Truck Convoy to benefit Special Olympics

Oct. 05--Law Enforcement and truckers throughout the United States and Canada will join forces during the Tinley Park Truck Convoy for Special Olympics hosted by the Tinley Park Police Department. The event raises funds to help Special Olympics athletes train in year-round sports activities. The 14th annual Tinley Park Truck Convoy begins with registration at 8 a.m,. Oct. 13 at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, 19100 Ridgeland Ave., Tinley Park. The convoy begins at 10 a.m., when police will escort the convoy about 22 miles along Interstates 57 and 80. In 2017, 230 trucks participated and raised $70,000 for Special Olympics Illinois. H-F Park District awarded national gold medal

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District has been awarded the 2018 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. The American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and the National Recreation and Park Association, presented the award to Park District representatives at the 2018 NRPA Annual Conference in Indianapolis. The H-F Park District won the Grand Plaque for districts that serve a population of less than 30,000. Agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energy of citizens, staff and elected officials.

Mental health first aid class set in New Lenox

The village of New Lenox and the New Lenox Safe Communities America Coalition, in partnership with Sertoma Centre, Inc. is offering a free Mental Health First Aid class from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, Oct. 11, at the New Lenox Community Park District's Administrative Offices, 701 W. Haven Ave., New Lenox. Lunch will be provided. This class is ideal for behavioral health professionals, social workers, counselors, first responders and anyone who wants to learn about the warning signs of major depression and suicidal behavior. Information will include risk factors and warning signs for non-suicidal self-injury, warning signs of substance abuse dependence and an action plan for those addicted to substances. Homewood sets Hobo Night Oct. 13

The village of Homewood presents Homewood Hobo Night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m Oct. 13 at the Homewood Rail Park, at Chestnut and Park Ave. Hosted by the Village of Homewood Rail Committee, the event features songs around the bonfire by M.G. Bailey, s'mores, decoding activities, samples of hobo stew compliments of Redbird Cafe and tours of the Rail Park's retired and restored Illinois Central locomotive and caboose. Admission is free. Program in South Holland features vintage quilts

The Heritage Quilters Guild presents a program Quilts My Grandmother Didn't Make featuring Barb Vlack and her collection of vintage quilts and fabrics as well as reproductions they inspired and stories behind the historic quilts from the 1930s and 1940s. The program is part of the group's October meeting at 7 p.m.Oct. 16 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 651 E. 166th St, South Holland.
