Knights to host Tootsie Roll drive

The Newton Kansan - 10/10/2018

Oct. 08--The Knights of Columbus has a sweet proposition for Newton residents -- buy a Tootsie Roll from them, and they will support Special Olympics.

"When you see a Knight in his bright yellow and red apron, please help us and our community's special citizens," wrote John Flores, a member of the group.

Oct. 12 through 14 are designated as "Helping People with Intellectual Disability" days. The Knights of Columbus will be handing out specially marked Tootsie Rolls, and accepting donations, in front of local stores. Knights of Columbus volunteers will be designated by yellow vests they wear.

Eighty percent of the donations will benefit three local organizations -- the "Wildcats," a local Special Olympics team; Trinity Heights Respite Care; and "Circle of Friends," a group created by the Harvey County Special Education Cooperative. The remaining 20 percent of donations will be used to sponsor the Knights of Columbus State Special Olympics Basketball Tournament at Fort Hays State University.

"Recognizing intellectual disabilities have no boundaries of race, religion or social status, the Knights of Columbus will donate their time and energy across Kansas that weekend," Florez wrote.

Donations can also be sent to the local Knights of Columbus council by mail at 401 SW Sixth, Newton, KS, 67114. Checks should be made payable to "Tootsie Roll Program Fund."
