AR-15 rifle involved in Mount Vernon man's alleged assault of father

Joplin Globe - 11/25/2018

Nov. 25--MOUNT VERNON, Mo. -- A rural Mount Vernon man waived a preliminary hearing last week on charges that he head-butted his son and threatened his father with an AR-15 rifle.

Jeremy G. Calvin, 40, waived the hearing Monday in Lawrence County Circuit Court and was ordered bound over on charges of first-degree domestic assault and second-degree domestic assault. Associate Judge Scott Sifferman set his initial appearance in a trial division of the court on Dec. 10.

The alleged offenses took place March 4 at 17440 County Road 1110 near Mount Vernon. The defendant's father called the Lawrence County sheriff's office and reported that his son shot at him with an AR-15 rifle.

According to a probable-cause affidavit, Jeremy Calvin admitted to the deputy who responded to the call that he became angry when he returned home and saw his son had left a mess in the driveway. He told the deputy that his son came out of the house and smarted off to him, so he hit his son in the head near his ear.

The defendant claimed the son ran back into the house and that his father, Walter Calvin, came out moments later and started hitting him with a cane. Jeremy Calvin told the deputy that he then pulled a rifle out of his truck, fired two rounds into the ground and then pointed the gun at his father.

Walter Calvin told the deputy that his grandson came running into the house crying that his father had grabbed him by the ears and head-butted him. He said he was tired of Jeremy hitting his kids and went outside to confront him. He said Jeremy started yelling back at him and making threats until he finally got tired of it and hit him with his cane, according to the affidavit.

According to Walter Calvin's account, Jeremy Calvin then stepped to the back of his truck and pulled out the AR-15. He told the deputy his son pointed the weapon at him and fired two rounds.
