Vian man sentenced to five years on sex charge

Times Record - 2/28/2019

Feb. 28-- Feb. 28--A Vian man has been federally sentenced in the Eastern District of Oklahoma on sex charges involving a minor.

Donald Lee Blackbird, 59, of Vian was sentenced to five years in prison and five years supervised release for attempted sexual abuse of a minor. The indictment alleged Blackbird in April 2018 tried to engage in a sex act with a juvenile between 12-16 years old in Indian Country on an allotment, according to an Eastern District news release.

"People that prey upon children are and always must be priority targets for investigation and prosecution," Eastern District Attorney Brian Kuester said in the release. "Predators will take advantage of every opportunity they have to satisfy their deviant desires, even if that means taking advantage of a child. Their crimes, by their own design, occur in private and thus can be difficult to prove. I applaud the victim for having the courage to endure the investigative and prosecutorial process."

Officials with the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, the release states.
