Prairie Elementary assistant principal sentenced in domestic assault case

The Daily Globe - 12/5/2019

Dec. 4--WORTHINGTON -- A Prairie Elementary assistant principal will spend one year on supervised probation and pay a $300 fine for injuring his spouse during domestic incidents earlier this year.

Cory Van Briesen, 46, was convicted Tuesday of one count of misdemeanor domestic assault. A 90-day jail sentence will be stayed pending successful completion of probation, which includes an order to submit to a domestic violence assessment and diagnostic assessment and follow recommendations.

One other misdemeanor domestic assault charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Charges were filed in March against Van Briesen following a domestic assault investigation, which reportedly included audio evidence of an argument that resulted in the victim being shoved into a door. The subsequent injury included bruises, which were photographed by law enforcement.

In his signed plea agreement, Van Briesen said he intentionally pushed the victim "back" during an argument, but called her injury "accidental."
