Moline Dispatch and Rock Island Argus - 4/17/2024

Apr. 16—A Davenport man accused of committing sex crimes against a child awaits sentencing after entering a plea agreement with the Scott County Attorney's Office.

Stephen P. Goodman, 35, faced charges of second-degree sexual abuse and lascivious acts with a child, according to county court records. The charges stem from his alleged acts with a juvenile in 2022. The Davenport Police Department investigated the case.

After agreeing to make a plea in the case, Goodman entered an Alford plea to third-degree sexual abuse, court records state.

A person making an Alford plea does not admit guilt but acknowledges a conviction is likely at trial.

Prosecutors will dismiss the count of lascivious acts at sentencing, which is scheduled for June 20, records state.

The plea agreement states that third-degree sexual abuse has a mandatory incarceration requirement, court records state. Goodman could serve up to 10 years in an Iowa prison.

He must also remain on parole for life and must submit to various residency and employment restrictions, the plea agreement states. He must also register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

The court's acceptance of the plea agreement has been deferred pending review of a presentence investigation report on Goodman as well as further consideration during sentencing, court records state.

A presentence investigation report provides background on a defendant and is meant to aid a judge in determining the appropriate sentence.
