New Support Group Will Aid Survivors of Sexual Assault

Voices - 2/25/2017

WOODBURY - First Steps, a new support group for women who are survivors of sexual assault and incest, meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. every Monday.

According to group facilitator Debbie Mitchell, support groups can be a stepping stone towards the healing process of a survivor.

Often a child being abused doesn't recognize it as such until she or he becomes older. By then, guilt and shame take over and the child keeps the abuse a secret.

"Of course, there are other reasons a child or an adult might keep sexual abuse a secret, but guilt and shame can last a lifetime," she said.

When a victim is holding this secret while also trying to live a normal life, the symptoms of abuse might begin to show in the form of nightmares, anxiety, depressive disorder, confusion or panic attacks.

"Much to the dismay of this adult child, they can no longer control the cost of holding that terrible secret," Ms. Mitchell said. "Joining a support group can be life-changing. Suddenly, this person who thought they were alone in the world is hearing others say aloud what they hadn't yet found words for.

"These other survivors are non-judgmental, compassionate, understanding and caring. Slowly life changes. Self-esteem grows. Bonds are made, sometimes life-long friendships are found. Life becomes full of hope."

First Steps is for those survivors who are just beginning their journey towards healing. The group will meet for 12 weeks.

For those who are already comfortable with talking about their abuse and are familiar with using coping skills, there is a group that meets on Thursday evenings in Waterbury.

Both groups are free and are offered through Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury.
