BRIEF: Ex-Madison cop still awaiting trial on sex abuse charges

News Courier - 3/5/2017

March 04--In August 2012, then-Madison police officer William Watson was charged with sexual abuse of a child under age 12 and second-degree sexual abuse.

The charges involved multiple girls whom Watson knew, Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones said at the time of Watson's arrest. Jones could not disclose how Watson, 58, of 13156 Burgreen Road, Madison, knew the girls.

Since then, Watson's trial has been set and reset 16 times, the latest for May 1 in Limestone County Circuit Court. A plea day is scheduled April 19, at which time the defendant could plead guilty in exchange for a lesser sentence if he chooses.

Whether Watson, will be tried May 1 is uncertain. Other cases are also scheduled for trial that day, and the district attorney's office can typically try only one major case, such as a murder case, in a week.

Watson is no longer a police officer.

He remains free on bond pending trial.
