Dayton jailed for as­sault­ing girl­friend

MILLERSBURG — A Berlin man is in custody, facing felony charges that he assaulted his girlfriend at their home early Wednesday morning.

C.G. Thomas Dayton, 23, of 13 E. Miller Ave., is charged in Holmes County Municipal Court with domestic violence and disrupting public services.

Both are fourth-degree felonies, the domestic violence charge made so because Dayton was convicted of domestic violence in Massillon Municipal Court in May 2013.

If convicted, Dayton faces up to 18 months in prison on each count.

He was arrested after a Holmes County Sheriff’s deputy was called at 1:05 a.m. to the residence by his 35-year-old girlfriend, who reported that a verbal argument over text messages he had allegedly received turned physical.

She reported Dayton kicked her in the stomach, pushed her, choked her and put her in a headlock, according to Chief Deputy Richard Haun, noting the woman did not seek medical treatment for her injuries.

During the incident, Haun said, Dayton allegedly took the woman’s cellphone from her, preventing her from using it to call for assistance.

Dayton, who remains incarcerated in the Holmes County Jail, with bond set at $20,000, is next scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on March 16.
