April has been recognized officially as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Chilton County for 2017.

On April 3, Probate Judge Bobby Martin and Judge Chris Speaks signed a proclamation at Butterfly Bridge Children's Advocacy Center dedicating April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The proclamation calls citizens, community agencies, religious organizations, medical facilities and businesses to increase their participation in efforts to prevent child abuse.

According to Butterfly Bridge, there were 419 reports of child abuse and neglect made in Chilton County last year ? a 10 percent increase from the previous year.

The proclamation states that "it is the responsibility of every adult who comes in contact with a child to protect that child's inalienable right to a safe and nurturing childhood" and that "our communities are stronger when all citizens become aware of child maltreatment prevention and become involved in supporting parents to raise their children in a safe and nurturing environment."

There are extra opportunities to give towards child abuse prevention this month.

Many restaurants in Clanton will participate by giving a percentage of their income on certain days to Butterfly Bridge. The dates and locations are listed on the Butterfly Bridge Facebook page.

The nonprofit will also host a fundraising event at Hidden Meadow Winery on April 20 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Attendees can purchase a pinwheel ahead of time to plant in the Garden of Support to honor a victim of child abuse.
