San Bernardino parolee-at-large detained after pursuit sparked by possible domestic violence call

San Bernardino County Sun - 4/18/2017

April 18--SAN BERNARDINO -- Police arrested a parolee-at-large Tuesday morning following a pursuit that started as a possible report of domestic violence.

Authorities say the call started around 8:30 a.m. when a woman went into a gas station at 1930 Waterman Ave. looking for help when she was dragged out by a man with a gun, according to initial dispatch reports. The vehicle, a black sedan, sped away with the woman driving, according to Sgt. Shauna Gates, of the San Bernardino Police Department.

Officers caught up with the vehicle but the driver refused to stop, Gates said.

The pursuit went through various city streets toward the Perris Hill Park area of the city, and at times the sedan went against traffic, Gates said. But no one was hurt during the 15-minute chase.

During the chase, officers say the passenger, later identified as Matthew Gibbs, 24, of San Bernardino, tossed a hand gun into the wash near Perris Hill Park. A magazine and at least one bullet were recovered.

The pursuit ended in a dead-end street at Elm Avenue and Elm Court just after 9 a.m.

The woman was pulled from the vehicle and Gibbs was detained. It wasn't immediately clear what offenses he would be arrested on besides his parole violation. The incident is still under investigation.
