Babysitter suspected of child abuse in Brownsville

Appeal-Democrat - 5/13/2017

May 13--The Yuba County Sheriff's Office is investigating an alleged child abuse incident. A teenage babysitter in Brownsville is suspected of abuse after a 2-year-old girl was found unresponsive and flown to a Sacramento area hospital to receive emergency brain surgery.

Sheriff's deputies received a call from medical personnel around 2:20 p.m. Thursday for the 8400 block of La Porte Road, Brownsville.

Medical personnel requested YCSO assistance at the scene after they discovered injuries to the toddler that appeared suspicious, said Leslie Carbah, spokesperson for YCSO. Detectives then took over the investigation as a possible physical child abuse case.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim, as well as three other children ranging in age from newborn to 5 years old, were left at the residence with a 16-year-old male babysitter. The babysitter reportedly told investigators he had attempted to discipline the 2-year-old girl, which resulted in a head injury, Carbah said.

"The suspect was arrested for felony child abuse and an outstanding warrant out of Sacramento County, and was booked into Juvenile Hall," Carbah said in a press release.

The child was recovering from the surgery on Friday morning. She was transported by helicopter Thursday afternoon from a Brownsville residence.

The teenage suspect and the victim's family had recently moved from the Sacramento area to Yuba County.
