BRIEF: IN COURT TODAY: Johnathan McCarty, new suspect in 2013 sex abuse case

Austin American-Statesman - 7/18/2017

July 18--Johnathan McCarty, who has been named as an alternative suspect in a child sexual assault case that led to the conviction of Greg Kelley, is expected to appear in Williamson County court Tuesday afternoon.

McCarty hasn't been charged with the crime but the hearing concerns his probation violation on drug charges. He has been in jail since late May on $400,000 bail for those charges.

McCarty's mother operated an in-home daycare where authorities think the assault happened in 2013.

Kelley, who was staying at the home, was convicted in 2014 and is serving a 25-year prison sentence.

Prosecutors in recent months reopened the case amid new information showing that McCarty may have been involved. The Texas Rangers are investigating.

Kelley's mother and other supporters were in the courtroom Tuesday awaiting McCarty's appearance.
