New support group for elder abuse, neglect and exploitation

Faribault Daily News - 7/19/2017

Support group to start in August

The Minnesota Elder Justice Center and the Faribault Senior Center are partnering on a community support group for those affected by elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation.

We recognize that many vulnerable people experience abuse, neglect, self-neglect, financial scams, and financial exploitation, and hope to give them an opportunity to speak and be heard.

We welcome adult children helping their parent leave an abusive relationship, adult grandchildren helping an elder victim recover from a financial scam or exploitation, concerned friends or neighbors trying to assist a vulnerable adult experiencing neglect or self-neglect, and any other individuals impacted by the abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult. For more information: www.elderjusticemn.org

Our first meeting is from 6-8 p.m., Monday, Aug 21 at the Senior Center, where we will listen to a presentation on basics of elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation followed by a group discussion. Subsequent meetings will be held on the third Monday of each month. There is no cost, pre-registration or Senior Center membership required.

Campaign news

We ask the community to please remember to make their gift or a pledge towards our Building Expansion Capital Campaign. It is exciting to be able to share that we now have 491 unique donors who have given over $1.65 million toward our fundraising goal. We are so appreciative of every gift that has been given to this project. We are receiving new and additional gifts nearly every day!

Have you given yet? If you haven't, please consider a gift. It will take everyone's help to make this a reality and now that the pledge period is extended another year there is more time to spread out your payment. If you need a donation form, you can stop at the Senior Center for one or download it at faribaultseniorcenter.org.

Can you volunteer?

The Red Cross locally and around the world is seeing a great need for blood donations. Currently donated blood is going out faster than it is coming in and therefore efficient blood drives are very important. Fully staffed drives not only include Red Cross employees but also volunteers.

In Faribault the last year we have seen a decrease in blood drive volunteers. Volunteer potions include working in the canteen or as a greeter. Canteen volunteers provide food, beverage and conversation to donors after they have donated. Greeters welcome, check-in, provide direction and literature for donors to review before giving.

If you would like to increase the blood donations coming out of Faribault and are interested in volunteering for either of these positions please contact Gina Yetzer at 507-412-9533 or jgyetzer@msn.com.
