NORCATUR - A Decatur County sheriff's deputy responding to a domestic violence call Thursday night shot and wounded a Norcatur man who allegedly pointed a gun at another officer, according to a news release from the Decatur County Sheriff's Office.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating.

After Patrick "P.T." Shirley, 54, of Norcatur, was shot by the deputy at about 8:45 p.m., he received medical treatment from an ambulance crew called to the scene, according to a news release from the KBI. He was flown to Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, Neb., and underwent surgery, according to the KBI news release.

A hospital spokesman said Friday afternoon that no patient by that name was listed as having been at the hospital.

According to the KBI news release, preliminary information indicates that two deputies went to a house at 2344 Highway 36, in Norcatur, after dispatchers received a call from someone about 8:45 p.m. Thursday reporting a domestic disturbance.

The deputies located a man in a large outbuilding northwest of the home. He was armed with a firearm. Attempts were made to talk with the man and de-escalate the situation, but at one point, the man pointed his gun in the direction of one of the deputies, according to the KBI release. The other deputy fired his service weapon at the man, injuring him, the KBI news release reads.

The KBI's assistance in investigating the shooting was requested at 9:30 p.m., and KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded.

The news release did not name the deputies involved in the incident. It also did not indictate whether the deputy who shot his weapon was to remain on active duty or be placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation, as is customary. A sheriff's office representative said no additional information could be released.

After the KBI investigation is completed, the findings will be turned over to the Decatur County Attorney's Office, according to the news release.
