Child sex abuse plea yields 20-year prison term for Tulsa man

Tulsa World - 9/14/2017

A Tulsa man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to six counts of child sexual abuse, four of which occurred against a girl 12 or younger at the time.

Raymond Jelani Pitts, 34, was accused of sexually assaulting a now-18-year-old relative at two Tulsa residences. The girl turned 13 before two of the assaults occurred, according to court records.

Pitts was arrested in April 2016 after police responded to a disturbance between Pitts, who had a warrant out for his arrest for the sex crimes charges, and another man. Officers used a Taser during Pitts' arrest, saying in a report that he continued to struggle with an officer even after being tackled.

District Judge Sharon Holmes on Monday sentenced Pitts to 20 years in prison with another 10 years suspended on all six counts, but ordered each sentence to be served concurrently.

Authorities said the girl told her mother that Pitts had molested her. The mother then confronted Pitts, and he was admitted to a hospital after expressing suicidal tendencies, investigators said.
