BRIEF: A girl told her friend about the alleged rapes. Her friend told the school

Bellingham Herald - 1/20/2018

Jan. 20--A Whatcom County man was arrested Wednesday after allegations of sexual assault involving a young girl surfaced.

James Loren Troupe, 54, was arrested after a tip from a school counselor that he had been sexually assaulting a girl for several years, said Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks.

Parks said the 17-year-old Bellingham girl told a friend about the alleged attacks, and the friend reported the conversation to a school counselor.

"This was an ongoing incidence of sexual abuse," Parks said. "It ended somewhere around April of 2017."

He said the alleged rapes began in 2011, when the girl was in elementary school.

Parks said Troupe was arrested at his home on Vining Road in the Van Wyck area.

He remained in custody Friday, according to jail records.
