Ames man arrested for allegedly threatening, assaulting woman

Ames Tribune - 4/10/2018

April 10--An Ames man was arrested Monday after court documents show that he threatened to kill and assaulted his then-girlfriend multiple times in late 2017.

Robert Paul Kimbrough, 28, is charged with three counts of first-degree harassment, two counts of domestic assault with injury, two counts of aggravated domestic assault, interference with official acts, assault on a peace officer and probation violation.

According to court documents, officers were originally alerted in late October to text messages sent by Kimbrough to a woman a month earlier, in which he threatened to kill her and showed a picture of a handgun. Documents allege that the victim forwarded the messages to a friend "in case something happened to her."

Around that same time, officers were also alerted to an incident at the west Ames Hy-Vee Gas -- 4018 Lincoln Way -- in which a witness reported a man, later identified as Kimbrough, strangling a woman while the two were in a vehicle in the parking lot.

Documents show that Kimbrough began strangling the victim and threatened to kill her, while a witness was watching the attack happen while on her cell phone. Kimbrough reportedly saw this and stopped the assault.

In another incident, documents show that the victim told police Kimbrough assaulted her a separate time in September 2017, when he reportedly gave her a black eye and once again threatened to kill her.

On Sunday, officers were again called to Kimbrough's home for a domestic dispute, knowing that he had a warrant for his arrest. Documents show that Kimbrough was put in handcuffs, at which point he spat at an officer's feet while being walked to a squad car. After being told not to spit, documents show Kimbrough again spat on an officer, and physically resisted.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 19.

As of Monday afternoon, Kimbrough remained held at the Story County Jail without bond.
