BRIEF: 2018 Prevent Child Abuse event Friday

Richmond Register - 4/13/2018

April 13--More than 500 pinwheels will be planted outside the Madison County Courthouse on Friday as part of the 2018 Prevent Child Abuse event put on by CASA and the Department of Community Based Services.

Each pinwheel represents a child who was abused or neglected in 2017, CASA of Madison County executive director Victoria Benge said.

The pinwheels symbolize the childhood everyone should have, Benge said. It was chosen in 2008 by Prevent Child Abuse America as the national symbol after research showed people respond to the pinwheel, due to its whimsical and childlike nature.

The awareness event will feature free food, fire truck tours, photos with Disney princesses and door prizes.

The event also will feature speeches by Benge, Madison County family court judge Nora Shepherd and Madison County judge-executive Reagan Taylor. Madison County foster parents Jamie and Angie Boggs also will speak.

The event is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m.
