Beaches Leader - 6/7/2018

In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, ElderSource is hosting a free workshop, "Empower Yourself: Learn How Not to be Scammed" on Thursday, June 14 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Jacksonville Public Library Beaches Branch located at 600 Third Street, Neptune Beach.

The workshop will help participants identify and protect themselves from scams, fraud, financial exploitation and elder abuse. Guest speakers Justine Conley, Associate Director of Outreach and Advocacy, AARP Florida; and Ken Amaro, First Coast News Consumer Advocate will share important information about how to spot a scammer and the most frequently employed ways seniors are taken advantage of.

Approximately one in 10 Americans aged 60 and over have experienced some form of elder abuse. Some estimates range as high as five million elders who are abused each year. It is also estimated that only one in 14 cases of abuse are reported to authorities, according to the National Council on Aging). Abuse and neglect of elders comes in many forms. If a person suspects that an elder is being financially exploited, neglected or abused, call the Florida Abuse Hotline at 1-800-962-2873. Calls can be placed anonymously with the agency.

A free boxed lunch will be provided for the first 100 to register. Register by June 11 by calling 904 630-4654.
