High Point Enterprise - 11/17/2018

Nov. 16--HIGH POINT -- High Point Market exhibitors donated more than 475 items to help homeowners who are recovering from Hurricane Florence in the eastern part of the state.

Exhibitors were encouraged to deliver donated furnishings to a 53-foot semi-trailer parked between Showplace and the International Home Furnishings Center at the end of the Oct. 13-17 market. Within a few days, the first truckload filled with donated furniture and a second truck was needed to deliver more than 125 chairs, 147 rugs, 23 tables, 10 couches/sofa beds, nine desks/bookcases, 45 art/accessory items, and pillows, bed frames and other household furnishings.

"We are truly humbled and grateful for all the exhibitors who donated products to help the hurricane victims here in our state through this recent project, and for all the exhibitors as a whole who are intentional about making community support part of their business plan," said Ashley D. Grigg, High Point Market Authority director of marketing and communications. "We are proud to be a part of such a caring industry."

All of the furnishings were delivered to The Green Chair Project, a Raleigh-based furnishings assistance nonprofit that primarily serves Wake County.

"Due to the overwhelming need in our state for furnishings assistance in the eastern part of the state, the governor's office asked us to get involved in furnishing the over 7,000 homes that had been completely or partially destroyed," said Jackie Craig, executive director, The Green Chair Project. "In the long-term recovery phase as people move back into their homes, we will be able to provide entire households with furnishings, in other words to equip them with everything they need to replace and begin again."

The Green Chair Project is coordinating efforts out of its Raleigh location and working with local agencies in the impacted areas to identify households that are most in need and who don't have other means of replacing their furnishings.
