BELOIT - A baby who reportedly suffered a skull fracture and was left in a vegetative state died Sunday and his father, who has been charged with child abuse, could face upgraded charges.

Deanthony Cardell Hodges, 31, of Beloit, was charged in Rock County Court on March 22 with child neglect causing great bodily harm and child abuse causing bodily harm after his 2-month-old son was rushed to the hospital on March 20.

Medical personnel discovered the baby had a skull fracture, a subdural hematoma, bruising on his legs and patechia in his eyes, according to a criminal complaint filed in Rock County Circuit Court.

After initially being taken to Beloit Memorial Hospital, the child was flown to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

A child advocacy physician at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin told Beloit police the child effectively was brain dead and if the child lived, he would not be able to walk or talk.

Hodges could face additional charges of abuse causing death, according to police.

A report from the Rock County Medical Examiner's office is expected later today, Cpt. Dan Molland said this morning.

"We want to make sure we are following everything correctly," he said. "Any time there is a child involved we want to ensure everything possible is done to be completely thorough."

Police said the investigation remains open and ongoing, as officers look into all possible circumstances that may have contributed to the child's death.

The Rock County District Attorney's Office could not be reached for comment regarding the case.
