Free workshop aims to create support network for parents

Gaylord Herald Times - 4/10/2017

GAYLORD - A "Skills for Effective Parent Advocacy" workshop is being held to help establish a network for parents with children who have disabilities. The workshop will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at the Otsego County Library, 700 S. Otsego Ave.

Tamyra Cornwell, Michigan Alliance for Families parent mentor, will facilitate the webinar and discussion.

The event will explore the skills parents can use to become more effective advocates for their child with a disability, including rights and responsibilities. Resolving disagreements will also be covered. It's a great opportunity to network with other parents, access resources and register for future workshops. A light dinner will be served.

Event coordinators said the event is especially helpful for families of children and/or teenagers with disabilities and/or learning challenges, school staff, community members and organizations.

Anyone interested in the event is encouraged to register by April 11 with Cornwell at (231) 445-2339, tamyra@michiganallianceforfamilies.org or online at michiganallianceforfamilies.org/rsvp.

A minimum number of participants need to be registered by the deadline in order for the presentation to be held. People are still welcome to attend even if they have not registered by the deadline but should please call or email to check the status of the event.

If you require accommodations or materials in an alternative format, please let the facilitator know one week before the workshop.
