Parkinson event to help families deal with illness

The Laurinburg Exchange - 4/24/2017

April 21--LAURINBURG -- Doctors diagnose, but it is up to patients to educate themselves in many circumstances.

Starting in 2005, Doris Milligan, the widow of a Parkinson's patient, has been helping to inform Scotland County residents about how to deal with the disease and live a quality life.

On Thursday, Milligan will be host a Parkinson's Awareness Month Event at Scotia Village starting at 3 p.m.

The free workshop will feature Dr. Laura Beck, a therapist at MaxMotion Physical Therapy in Pinehurst. Beck is a board-certified neurologic clinical specialist with experience dealing with patients suffering from neurological conditions.

According to Milligan, after individuals are diagnosed with Parkinson's, it is often up to them to research and find ways to deal with the dopamine-related disease.

"This is especially true in Laurinburg, where the nearest Parkinson's specialist is 100 miles away, which is why I am trying to educate as many people as possible," Milligan said.

The event is open to the public and is not just for people living with Parkinson's, "it is for everybody," Milligan said.

"Most people with the disease are in denial, and with events like this we try to educate and give them info so they can live a good quality life," she said.

Milligan oversees a support group for the neurological disease, which meets the third Tuesday of each month at 3 p.m. in the aerobics room at Scotia Village.

Although the condition is incurable and progressive, exercising and taking better care of yourself can help patients, Milligan said, who was a registered nurse "way back when."

The event is being sponsored by the Scotland Memorial Foundation
