WIC helps families with low income

Spooner Advocate - 8/29/2017

Conveniently located within the Washburn County Health Department, WIC (the Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program) has been offering help to low-income families for over 40 years. Fathers, guardians or foster parents also may apply for WIC.

A Registered Dietitian can talk about the family's nutrition, planning healthy meals, and shopping on a budget. WIC helps families to buy foods such as milk, peanut butter, fruits and vegetables, cereal, eggs, and more.

Farmers markets are in full swing with lots of fruits and vegetables at their peak for ripeness and availability. WIC provides checks for low-income families to purchase some great produce, straight from the farm, as fresh as it gets.

People may qualify for WIC if:

They live in Wisconsin.

They are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have had a baby in the past six months.

They have an infant or children under age 5.

They or their children have a health or nutrition need.

All the income coming into the home (before any deductions) is less than or equal to WIC income guidelines.

For an appointment, or to find out about qualifying to participate: Washburn County WIC, 715.635.4400.
