MOORESVILLE

After raising money for one month, Bran N Shorts presented a $819.08 check to Mooresville Schools' Family Services Friday morning.

Each month, according to Mooresville Schools' Communications Director Susan Haynes, Bran N Shorts sets out a tip jar and 100 percent of the money goes to a non-profit organization in the area. For the month of August, Bran N Shorts chose for Family Services to receive those donations.

Family Services caters to social services needs for families, including referring them to counseling, emergency food and transportation for places such as the doctor's office. They also help refer families to Community Partners.

Family Services also helps families with the 21st Century Scholars application, free and reduced lunch applications, Christmas assistance and more, according to the Mooresville Schools' website.

Family Service Coordinators Kay Davis and Tammy Medsker said they plan to use the money for their school supply drive. All during the summer, the coordinators work to gather school supplies for students for their annual drive. Although the drive was in August, Family Services continues to accept supplies, and monetary donations for them to purchase supplies that are most needed, all throughout the year. Along with purchasing school supplies, Haynes said they plan to purchase items such as tennis shoes for students who are in need of them.

According to store manager Casey Pratt, this is the largest monthly donation the store has yet received. This month, all of their donations are going to help with Hurricane Harvey relief.
