Two local nonprofit social service agencies are mourning the loss of a family counselor found stabbed to death last weekend.

Cindy Therwhanger, 55, was found dead after she called a family member asking for help early Saturday morning. Her son, Tyler Therwhanger, 30, was arrested outside the house Saturday morning and was charged with capital murder. He is being held in the Harris County Jail, according to the sheriff's office.

"Cindy was an incredible gifted listener and therapist, especially if it related to family violence and family health. She had a huge impact with us and the clients she served," Roy Wooten said, Shield Bearer executive director. "All of Shield Bearer will grieve together; all of it is a shock. You never know when it is the last time you will get to say goodbye to someone. It reminds us of the preciousness of life. Cindy was a good, good soul, and it is a sad time for us."

Shield Bearer is a nonprofit charitable organization offers counseling services for families.

"Cindy was deeply dedicated to therapy services for survivors of domestic violence and also frequently worked with children, couples, individuals, and families around trauma, grief and loss issues, and PTSD," Wooten said. "She was deeply admired and appreciated by colleagues in her field. Cindy also freely shared her expertise by teaching classes about domestic violence, boundaries, and co-dependency."

Cindy Therwhanger was also a counselor at Northwest Assistance Ministries, a non-profit, social service agency comprised of several churches the region. The ministry provides assistance in areas such as food, shelter, health, education and domestic violence awareness and intervention.

"All of us at Northwest Assistance Ministries are deeply saddened by the passing of Cindy Therwhanger. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Cindy's family and to those friends and colleagues that are dealing with the loss of a dear friend," said Brian Carr, Northwest Assistance Ministries chief advancement officer.
